We Run for Matt by Bob Gfeller

This weekend is the 8th Annual and FINAL Matt Gfeller Memorial Doughnut Run. The Doughnut Run this year is Saturday, November 12 at 9 am at R.J. Reynolds High School in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. In our first seven years, the Doughnut Run had almost 5,000 runners to help us raise $250,000 to study traumatic brain injury in youth sports. We donate those funds to the Children’s Institute for Pediatric Trauma and the Matt Gfeller Center at Chapel Hill. Those 5,000 runners have eaten about 15,000 Krispy Kreme doughnuts.

You have a choice of “dough” or “no-dough” racing. If you want to be a dough runner, you get to eat six Krispy Kreme doughnuts half-way through the race, and try to finish the 5K race. If you want to be a no-dough runner, you can eat none or as many doughnuts as you want at the half-way point then finish the race. When Matt was a kid he loved Krispy Kreme doughnuts so his three buddies that started the race in 2009 wanted to memorialize the enjoyment they had eating Krispy Kreme doughnuts with Matt.

Last year we had over 900 runners and we’re hoping to get to 1,000 runners this year. If you’re a big runner, this race is now part of the Fleet Feet “We Run Winston-Salem” series. There are 10 races in the series, and if you’re in the series you can collect points from running in the Doughnut Run that will add to your standings in the We Run Winston-Salem event. Register at MatthewGfellerfoundation.org, and we’ll see you at the race!

Stay inspired!!
